Black History Walking Tours Edinburgh was founded by Lisa Williams in 2018. Lisa is of Caribbean British heritage, lived in Grenada for 20 years and moved to Edinburgh in 2011.
A Research Fellow at Edinburgh University, her unique approach comes from childhood stays in the islands, studying Caribbean history and society for her degree in the 1990s, and teaching primary school in Grenada.
We meet at the foot of the Melville Monument in St Andrew Square, and continue through the Georgian New Town to the medieval Old Town. We normally finish on the famous Royal Mile, but sometimes we do the tour in reverse.
We go inside beautiful and historic buildings and graveyards, courtyards and gardens. The route is flat except for the Mound. Toilet stops and seats en route.
At Black History Walking Tours Edinburgh, we believe in bringing people together of all backgrounds and ages to understand our shared history a little better.
Scotland's Black history isn't something separate from Scotland's wider history, but has often been overlooked. We like to show how what a globally connected city Edinburgh has always been!
Come and join us for one of our regular walks through Edinburgh's city centre, or special walks of waterfront areas like Portobello or Leith.
We host tours for school groups learning about the Atlantic Slave Trade, the Civil Rights movement or for general knowledge. We also have special family tours designed for children 8 and up with lots of fun thrown in!
We can create custom tours too.
